Wood staining/waxing/ oiling question..

Apologies to anybody who has read my similar post! Basically my goal is to stain/wax or oil these steps to preferably a dark mahogany sort of colour. Obviously, I don't want the middle to stand out and believe I will not be able to remove all of it (I think it's already oiled or stained ?!) my questions are simply; a) is it possible a darker dying method will cover it all up? B) what would be the preferred/ most effective method . Thanks a lot ! Saving me quite a bit of google rummaging here !

am going to be awkward here sorry - I work with woodwork and finishing all day long and if these were my stairs I'd carpet them without a doubt. Too much work to make these stairs look "right' even if you (I) could actually achieve a great end result - are the hours and hours of work worth it?? Are you wanting to refinish the side bits as well or just the steps (sorry re. terminology i'm not a chippie) Those steps will need 1 to 2mm sanded off them to make the step a uniform colour. Adjusting the colour to take into account the differences involves staining and most stains fade over time so you end up with a compromised job anyway.

I appreciate your opinion as you are obviously in the trade and know what you are talking about . Carpet it is then - you are not the first to point out it's not the best of plans.

I agree, however if you want the treads and risers in wood you can always glue engineered flooring or laminate to them you can get matching nosings too.

Polished, laminate stairs are very dangerous as they offer very little purchase to people wearing socks .
My sister had open polished stairs and very bruised shins.
