Hi all

I had to change the car recently, and bought an old (2007) bmw x3. I want to give it a good clean, but in order to do that I think I need to know what materials it is made from. The seats were described as leather, but they don't feel like leather. This is not a problem, I just want to know what I actually have so I can work out how to clean it. I attach some pics - can anybody help me identify the material?

Thanks!

I'd say they are leather - they certainly aren't fabric or alcantara.
Consider Autoglym leather cleaner and reviver for excellent results - test on an obscure area first.
John :)

Maybe it's like Mercedes leather- ie man made ! They call it artico ( or something similar) but it's really vinyl . Autoglym will do the job.

Thanks both. It certainly doesn't smell like leather, but the the whole car is a bit pongy which is why I want to give it a good clean. And it just doesn't look creased and loose enough to be real leather- the car has done 80k miles and I would have thought genuine leather would be more battered and bruised by now.

My dad has an autoglym kit- I'll borrow it and see how I get on with the leather cleaner.

Any cleaner for leather won't hurt your "artificial fake pseudo synthetic leather" if that's what you have. Why can't they just call it vinyl?

Do you have a BMW dealership nearby, or could you call them and give them the registration, and see if they can tell you.

Thanks both. I certainly agree with the notion of just calling it what it is! In the meantime I'll make a start with the leather cleaner. The pictures don't do justice to the mess the car is in, it stinks!

If it's warm you'll know what part of your seat is made from leather as the cleaner will be absorbed at different rates.
Leather seats shouldn't get stinky, more likely to be the carpets.
