Hello guys

I have been looking at slates to use on new build garage roof. The Brazilian Alpina Natural Slate

prices range from 400X200 @ £0.40 to 500/600X450 @ £4.18.

They are all described as 1st Quality a bit confusing to me.

I will have to consider both prices and durability. Can someone advise me please.

Thank you.

Lot of Pyorite in Brazilian, have a look at Spanish, Siga 39 or similiar.

If you are thinking of living in the property for a long time then
forget any of the imported slate.
Find a local reclamation yard and buy the local slate.

Many thanks to you both.

I will check these out

dont use the brazilian . The Spanish Siga 39 (SIG) isn't bad but I have seen the pyrites (mineral inclusions) rusting.
Glendyne is a v good slate and are near welsh quality.. then there are welsh of course, you pay your money
look for A1 S1 T1
Sig were doing a site specific 75 year guarantee on the 39s and would issue a certificate.

yep Glendynes are lovely slates, nice and thin and very flat and even, no inclusions.
Pyrites aren't always a problem in slates, I have a load of slates that I decided not to use because of pyrites, which have been out in the weather for about two years and there isn't a sign of rust on them, but if they do rust then it can be very unsightly and in severe cases holes rust right through. I wouldn't take the chance myself.
Prestige GM are good Spanish slates at a reasonable price if you don't mind a lighter colour.

Hi all

Just wondering- does this advice also apply to floor tiles? I had planned to buy (I think ) Brazilian slate.

Thanks

Nick

not really if you are happy aesthetically with pyrites in the slate then it doesn't matter as they will be sealed and the pyrites won't rust
