Sheeting shower cubicle. Ply n plasterboard?

I'm refitting my shower room in an old house. Got the room stripped back to posts. When I come to sheet round the 3 adjacent walls that will make the shower enclosure I was thinking of ply sheeting it first then the moisture resistant plasterboard. Or I could double sheet the plasterboard. Single sheeting doesn't seem enough although it's probably the norm?

It will be fully tiled eventually.

I was going to use moisture resistant plaster board and use a tanking paint on liquid.

Don't you have more joins with hardie etc because the sheets are smaller?

But would it be worth plywood ing behind for extra strength longevity?
 
If you want to use plasterboard and ply then off you go but it would be better to use cement board

Why is cement board better?

Would you normally put the cement board straight onto the studs? How do you seal the joints of the cement board so if moisture goes through the tile grouting it doesn't cause dampness in behind the wall?

The alternative to cement board is something with an XPS core e.g. Marmox.
This is lighter, so easier to work with, and somewhat insulating, which can be helpful in an older building.
 
Hardie all day..stagger the joins so you don't have 4 corners together and tape the joins with whatever adhesive your using.
