Hi,

I want to repaint our asbestos/concrete gutters (I say asbestos/concrete. I haven't got a clue what there made of to be honest).

Here is a picture of their current state.

I intend to very gently scrape off the loose bits while wearing a dust mask and repaint them with something, but I've no idea what that will be?

So any ideas of the best approach and best products to use would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

They look cast iron to me tbh so Hammerite would be my option but I could be wrong.

Thanks for your reply. They are definitely not cast iron, they are made of a grey coloured concrete or asbestos type material, so are the downpipes.

This picture (taken from above) might give a better idea of what they are made of.

Definitely asbestos/cement . Don't scrape them just paint them with a cheap black gloss inside and out then get them gone asap. No one touches asbestos nowadays. The paint will stabilise the material (y)

Thanks for the reply and advice about replacing them, but there are at least 400 to 500 other houses and bungalows in our area where these gutters are still up, they are really great gutters in terms of collecting water and getting it down the drains (no leaks etc). The only people who have replaced them with plastic are the few people who have built extensions.

Our house is also a semi, so replacing them would involve joining the plastic to our neighbours asbestos/cement gutters or persuading the neighbours to get their's done in plastic at the same time as ours.

With all that in mind, I fully intend to keep them up until they fail. So what's the best type of paint to use?

Asbestolux Guttering, remove loose paint, Undercoat and Gloss (Oil Based)
Black Jack Bitumastic paint for interior of gutters. ( or outside of gutters gives a matt finish )

Cheers, however I'm a little bit confused about the exteriors. I would like them to be matt black.

So do I just use Black Jack Bitumastic paint on the interiors and exterior? Or do I have to undercoat and gloss (Oil based) the exteriors, then go over the exteriors again with the Black Jack Bitumastic paint?

Probably best to go for Bitumastic interior of Gutters, make sure interior of guttering is dry, pour the paint in bit by bit and brush it along the interior of the guttering.

undercoat and gloss finish exterior of gutter/downpipes for a reasonable finish

Thanks, any recommendations for the best undercoat and gloss to use?
