.pst files in Outlook email

This is my first post .... I am using Outlook email service. When i try to open .pst format file with the help of Outlook this message pops up: FileName.pst file could not be opened. The file may not be compatible with this version of Outlook or it may be corrupted.
Can anyone advise what could have caused this and how to recover Outlook?

Did it ever open ok? Did you copy, download it from another machine? There is a pst repair tool that you can try (I would make a backup of the file before doing it)

Yes i could open the file before. I did not copy
