Stihl MS181 chainsaw stops after about 30sec

I could do with some help with my Stihl MS181 chainsaw which starts OK, but then stops after about 30secs, regardless of if I leave it to warm up in idle or rev it up as soon as it will take it.

I have cleaned the air filter and checked the fuel filter, both look ok.

I have heard that it might be a blocked spark arrestor but I am not sure how to get at it. I have removed the two spring clips (see picture) from the exhaust, hoping that would allow me to remove the muffler and find the arrestor, but nothing seems to budge.

Am I on the right track

If you want to shift the muffler, prize those daft clips away and you'll find torx screws beneath......no need to use those things anyway!
I'd doubt that this is your problem though - try looking for the fuel tank breather (a conical rubber thing on the top) and blow the crap away with compressed air. If that doesn't help then its a carb stripdown......not too bad but you will need an aerosol of carb cleaner standing by. There is a very fine gauze filter inside the carb which may be blocked.

Any clue where the fuel tank breather is? Nothing obvious that I can see.

There are various designs, and they often hide below the carburettor.
Another trick is to run the thing with the fuel cap loose, of course.

Make sure you have correct mixture or it will seize after a brief run, which may be problem?
