2 way light switch problem HELP

Did it ever work?

When did it stop?

Looking at the connections in your old switch, it can't work as two two-way switches.
I also thought that, the link would normally not be in the com for two way switch, there are more than one way to wire two way switches, but normal way is com to com with no switch wires and then L1 to L1 and L2 to L2 either L1's are permanent line and L2's are switched line or vice versa, and where a line in borrowed from another switch that is clearly the permanent line.

The borrowing of the permanent line is not recommended as it can cause interference with hearing aids and can result in a borrowed neutral when up and downstairs is split. However nothing to say it's against any rules as long as no borrowed neutral.

This is the circuit diagram

I am following, as said there are other methods, so can't say 100% it is wrong, but seems likely it is wrong.

I'm not sure why there is any confusion.
I am totally sure why.

It is because the OP is expecting, and people are delivering, instructions to put-this-wire-in-that-hole, which he can blindly follow without actually knowing why.

Confusion is a likely outcome when people fiddle with things without a genuine understanding of how it all works.

Hi all that replied with your advice ..I am please to confirm that the new light switch is up and running without any issues.
i followed Sparkwright's instructions ..So thank you again..
Great forum ...

Oh no......what have I done? Soon there will be dis(pull)cord (that is really, really bad...) amongst us and we will end up lamping each other...

Another way to avoid borrowed neutrals is to put the lights for the common areas on the same circuit - upstairs, downstairs, and Hall/landing/under stairs.
It's arguably as good a split of the circuits as traditional up/down even if you put all the room lights on the same circuit as each other to keep 2 lighting circuits overall.

Or just not use this

and never have to worry about which circuit a light is on. There are very sound reasons for having the landing light on a different circuit to all the others on that floor.

Yeah sorry indeed that's what I meant. One circuit for Hall and landing lights, then one for all other lights.
