Car paint scratch repair

Personally I'd tread very carefully from now on......abrasive paper will certainly flatten the paint infill but you have to be certain that the scratches left behind can be polished out. If they can't then you are a lot worse off, unfortunately, and bear in mind that the colour layer of paint is really thin!
What I would consider though is a body clay bar - this substance is great for removing overspray without scratching, and its dramatically effective in removing roughness from paint. I was absolutely astounded when I first used it - the paint is completely smooth and unscratched after treatment. A lubricating soap spray must be used with it and the paint must be completely dry.
It may be easier to leave what you have done, and forget about it? A bit defeatist I know, but I also know when to bale out!

Sounds like OP has put on too much paint too thickly and ended up with lumpy touch-ins. Personally I'd flat it down, mask it up and do it with an aerosol. Any colour mismatch won't show in a door shut.

Burnerman - No problem and I completely understand . I only want to make it smooth and look nicer.

DaveHerns - I have carefully applied the paint and lacquer which doesn't make it evident on first sight. I only want to polish it around the edges of the scratch so even with a closer look it doesn't show up.

Apologies for too many questions as I want to give it a nicer finish. Professionals quoted between £120-£170 for this job.

I wouldn't use anything coarser than T Cut or paint restorer to finish it off , then a coat of wax.
