kitchen waste disposal removal

hi all,

we've just moved house and found out the waste disposal in the kitchen sink is broken. as its not something we'd ever really use anyway I want to just take it out and replace it with a standard drain. the trouble is, it looks like the opening in the sink may have been make bigger to accommodate the insinkerator, approximately 5 inches(don't have the exact size at the moment as im at work, will measure it later & edit post). I cant really replace the entire sink as I cant find one the same size and shape and the work tops are granite so I cant alter the them to take a different size sink. I cant seen to find any sink strainer basket in any size other than the standard 3.5 inch size.

does anyone know if theres some sort of reducing adaptor in existence that could be used so it will take a standard sink strainer? or suggest an alternative solution ? really don't want to put another disposal unit in.

Have you any pictures of the waste at the sink.
They are normally designed to use the standard holes in the sink, it could be an optical illusion.

When I do these, I find that a strainer waste (Screwfix 85413 for example) fits right in. They are available with or without overflow connections.
I think they are 90mm from memory, but you say yours is bigger?

yeah its definitely bigger than 90mm. i found a pdf online of the instructions for the disposal unit and theres a note saying" the sink hole may have to be enlarged to accept the disposer sink flange. sink hole enlargement tools are available from your insinkerator dealer"

although I suppose that could be for sinks with a hole smaller than 90mm.

I'd replace the unit. Don't know how people live without them.

Definitely and really broken - or just the thermal cutout operated?
There is a reset button usually on the underside of the motor unit.
