I'm decorating and all the flooring is being replaced.

The hall is currently just (dirty) floorboards and I want to protect the (light coloured) carpets that have been laid in some other rooms. It may be two months before I get the hall floored properly.

Changing footwear between rooms isnt working...

Should I clean the floorboard as best I can and varnish them as an interim solution?

Thoughts?

Sounds fair enough - that's what they used to do to our school in the holidays. Might be worth checking out a flooring varnish so it dries quick and can take the walking. You don't want a residue on your shoes from the wrong stuff:unsure:

Cleaning the floorboards will help, but varnishing them will more than likely be a waste. Could you pick up a cheap runner, or a few offcuts for the hallway. Might work out the same as the varnish, and would even save the floor cleaning.

get yourself down the carpet shop and get the cheapest offcut you can that will fit the hall.

Thanks. Thought about a runner for parts of the hall but I have 8 stairs and no idea how to make them fit carpet or a runner so thought varnish may work best.

Maybe off cut the flat bits and varnish the stairs?

Fairly good plan, but I still wouldn't bother with the varnish.

Personally, I wouldnt put any temporary covering on stairs incase someone in a hurry had a fall..cant you get away with just a good scrubbing?

Not really that keen on wetting the floorboards more often than essential.

Whats up with varnishing the stairs as a temp solution? Not sure I follow your rush / fall logic?

Unless you clean the floorboards first, the varnish won't stick, but having cleaned them, the varnish then becomes unnecessary if you're sorting it out in a couple of months. You're only wetting the top of the boards, not right the way through, and they will happily dry out afterwards. Woods pretty good like that.
