What tool is required to lift this drain cover?

And how does the tool actually work - do we need 4, one for each corner?

for your heavy one, at least two people.

Mine is plain cast iron and I can lift and slide it single-handed

You need to hire one of these:

But you have to do it very slowly to make sure you do not lift the complete frame and surrounding blocks. When you start to lift, if the blocks are moving up on the outer edge of the frame, you will need to hit the edge with a hammer to help separate the frame and cover. You can also a screwdriver between the cover and frame.

It will be hard to lift if there is sand between the lid and frame.

You can put the keys in opposite corners and pul them straight up. If it's not been up in a while you might have to swap the keys into other holes to get it moving before you can lift it up.

You could make a diy tool to lift, round bolt with head just big enough to fit in hole fixed thru a steel or timber bar near the end with head protruding , slid in hole should be enough leverage to lift.
Always use leverage on heavy item , never try a dead lift I.E straight up .
