Hi all,

My builder hired a staircase guy to install our loft staircase. It was done to a very poor standard. Now I'm having to go bit by bit to bring it to a decent standard. My question, can the first step of the loft stair case be changed in to a D-Step? I would like to change it as I hate the look of the wooden trim (think you call it a string) that sticks out. If it's possible, what will be the steps? You may view some pictures in the shared google link.

Yes, you can round it off - you don't need that bit of string at the bottom.

Thanks guys, what should I fill the eventual hole in the newel post with? Or shall I cut the string so as to leave some flush inside the post?

If you cut the string off flush with the face of the post, it will always look naff because you will see the end grain against the face of the post, and it will never paint well.
May be try and fill it with a proprietory filler (in stages) and sand flush?

Forgot to mention I would like to stain and varnish the stairs. Still fill? Or shall I try and create a piece so the grain direction matches the post and slot in?
