Moving ceiling over

i have extended my room out by around a meter.
With regards to the ceiling do you re-plasterboard the whole ceiling or just the new area and get it all re-skimmed. Pic below,

What I have always done, rightly or wrongly, is plaster board the new bit then skim the whole lot. You may need to double up on plaster board if it's above a garage or similar where you need the 30 min fire resistance
 
If you don't board the whole lot and skim, over board the existing and reskim the whole ceiling, or board the new but skim the whole lot, then it will look crap and you always see the join.
