I am removing some velus center pivoting windows and was wondering if I could use them in another project by installing them vertically like a normal window. would this work or would they leak some how.
They're designed to have the flashing round them to stop water getting in, and the cover over the top stops the rain getting into the vent section, so they'll leak. Unless you can find some way of sealing round the edges an on to the frame, but I still wouldn't like to speculate on the vent area being vertical. In addition, they are designed for the outer frame to be fitted, and then the window section to be dropped into place; you may find it next to impossible to get the window section in to place horrzontally.
The flashing should not be a problem as i would have cladding overlapping the frame. The vent should be oK if the top flashing is installed as this will be pointing down. As for installing window you have a good point it might not mechanically work.
I might be wrong and it might leak just wondering if anyone has tried it. I will be taking 6 out and its a shame to sell them as I would loose a lot on them
It's a very innovative idea, but I doubt anyones tried it - but I could be wrong. As to installing the window after the frames been fitted, it's not a mechanical issue, it's more having the strength to holed it whilst you slide it into the central runners. I have trouble lifting mine out straight up, so I'd hate to have to do the job horizontally. Unless of course you can fix the whole window in place in one go. It sounds as though you've got most issues covered, but you might need to foam fill the gap round the frame to stop any draughts.
When you get one out, try setting it up vertically, and see how it responds.
