Help no hot water!

Presumably he didn't spend more than 30 minutes on this. I'd say you got a great deal.

(If he did it properly which is looking dubious!)

I'd turn that valve anti clockwise for 3 turns see what happens.
It's a balancing valve to restrict hot water. If it's shut it won't heat.
You will also need to bleed the upstairs rads to remove air.

He spent a long time on it!!
He drained the downstairs utility room radiatior to stop the water from the pipe with the nail hole and then he took ages replacing the pipe cos it was in an awkward place
3 hours he was here! Hot water was working fine before he got here and my lounge radiator isn't heating up now

I can't turn that valve much it's too stiff...I've turned it anti clockwise as much as it will go!

To the Pros: Am I being thick,or is that just a basic Drayton Rad. TRV, as opposed to a cylstat?

Kezz: TBF&H, £90 per hour is not extortionate in itself. Assuming he knows what he is doing and does the job properly. Rates will vary massively depending, among other things, on location & ease of access, and "emergency" calls will always attract a premium

Where in the uk are you? £90 an hour 3 hours is a lot of money. And he should of left it working correctly. And if not a fault diagnosis.

I agree it's so expensive!

I'm worried be is going to make it worse when he comes back if he didn't even do this properly

yes, he is.

A skilled and competent person finds it very hard to do a bodge job, unless he is drunk or aggrieved.

If he is not skilled and competent, I wouldn't want him working in my house.

The fact that he overcharges for his substandard work is the icing on the cake.

It's Tap Stat, if you look at the pic with the pump you will see the sensor capillary coiled below it.
Well spotted JC. I was looking for the tube, but one should not drink Shiraz at home on a Wednesday. It still took a moment to see it, even after you said it was there, the start being hidden.

Kezz, have you had to engage professional workmen previously? £90 is not way over normal. Did he tell you his charges on the phone? Was your bill £270? Did he travel far?
Don't take to much notice of JohnD. He is a pro moaner, and google warrior.
I do concede, however, that charging a proper rate is only okay of you are skilled at that job. But every one can make a mistake, and perhaps assume too much. You have said that the position of the pipe was awkward, and that can run away with time.Pics?
A thought occurs to me - were you pressuring to finish as quick as poss to, (and I would understand why) minimise cost. Is it possible he finished too quickly without checking because he felt your pain as far as cost was concerned?

Critically, Kezz, have you checked if he is charging for the revisit?

The system you have appears ancient, and some systems can be a nightmare to reinstate.

Yeah we knew it was £90 an hour but had no choice but to pay it as they were the only company that could come out within the hour
Wasn't pressurising him at all to finish quickly he looked like he had difficulty replacing the pipe but I just assumed that was because it was in a tricky place which is fine I had no problem with paying the money I know nothing about plumbing and knew it would be expensive as it was an emergency call out
There is no way of running the hot water without putting the heating on usually I would just turn the thermostat down to zero and the radiators don't come on but water heats up
I assumed it would be free of charge as he has left we with no water and only half my radiators working when it was working fine before maybe I should call him and double check then but there's. I way I'm going to pay
Seems like a london number I rung but it's a company so don't know where he came from

Was it this mob?

This type of company is really a call centre. They do not employ tradesmen, just take your details, pass it to a local tradesman, and take a cut of his charges.
