Help no hot water!

for emergency call out charging £90 an hour isn't a rip off at all FFS'S ,to many variables were not privy too to make a judgement of works .as FiremanT has said we only have one side of this argument .

when you do start to vent the radiators ,you do not need to turn any valves off on any radiators ,and you most definitely should not try turning any of those old gate valves near the hot water cylinder ,as someone suggested.you stated Grandad had been fiddling with it ,not good. those valves are notoriously problematic ,they don't close properly ,sometimes snap internally and will not open. you will face a much higher plumbers bill if you come to grief with one of those gate valves. leave them alone .you do not need to touch them to bleed radiators.

So explain to me how the op should remove a potential airlock on a heating drop with the bypass open?

Totally I didn't have a problem with paying that money at all to fix my pipe but now my radiators don't work when they were fine before! Just asking how I can sort my rads out as the plumber wouldn't tell me!!

Nathan my post relates to venting rads and has nowt to do with air locks ,potential or otherwise .read op's post of 7.53 yesterday. and view the condition of the gate valves.advising a "diyer" to close / open them can possibly quite easily result in grief. IF, after venting all rads it is apparent that an air lock does exist , then further consideration can be given as to how to proceed.

Understood mate. But when she has 2 rads not working at all. Biting the bullet now and trying to sort it themselves is worth risking.

Fair enough. But your advice to the OP is a bit poor.

Pretty much as per Terry:
You don't need to clear a "potential" airlock
Messing with old gate valves (when not necessary, and not equipped to deal with an internally damaged valve) is a great way to risk serious aggravation
Her system needs venting before you start worrying about airlocks
Venting does not need interference of valves

the rads that are not heating could well have no water in them ,as the plumber apparently bled none of them. first things first mate. and if a gate valve is problematic the op ( god bless em ,dont even have a key to bleed the rads ) will have no chance of sorting it themselves , nor will they have any re course with the " plumber "' ,who would in all probability had the good sense to not even touch those gate valves.

How is it poor? I'm saying you can shut off each radiator one by one with the valve. Then I say vent each radiator?

And I'm sorry but get this valves are there for a reason. Yes they might leak from a gland break off or they might do the job that they're designed to do. And this saving the op who in my eyes has had a bad experience. Some money that's what this site is about no? Now I'm not trying to play god 99% of what I said is probably on a YouTube channel. But saying I'm wrong? don't think so

Because that is not the way it is done! If there is air in the leg, it cannot be released if there is a valve in the way. Obviously.
This is year 1 stuff, mate. Either you weren't listening or you have been doing commercial cookers and forgotten the basics.
