Hi all
I have just fitted a new thermostat and radiator on my nissan serena, however the temp gauge seems to be stuck in the same position, it is just about out of the cold position even when driven for about 10 miles.
I let it idle for about 15 mins from cold the other day and the gauge moved up to just under half way and the fans kicked in, I also left the rad cap off and squeezed both rad hoses to encourage any air to escape, both hoses were very hot.
Could this be an airlock issue,? there is an air relief valve near the engine block but dont know if this is automatic or if I need to bleed it myself.
Any advice would be truly appreciated.

If there's a bleed valve then slacken it with coolant cold and engine not running, tighten again once a steady flow comes out.
Edit... also set the heater temp to max hot.

Hi
Thanks for the speedy replies, I will bleed the system again with the advice given, the original stat was replaced but was working until it got stuck and was replaced by a mechanic, to be fair he did say it took ages to bleed.

I replaced the rad myself as it started to leak but since my post it has started moving again, thanks for the advice.

Maybe the replacement thermostat was one that opens slightly earlier than the original?
The opening temperature is often marked on them.

Thanks for replies

Stat opening temp same as original. did a short trip yesterday approx. 10 miles, kept heater blower on lots of heat, if I describe the needle position like a clock face ie 7 being cold and 11 being in the red the needle stays in between 7 and 8 ? the original reading was maintained at just under the 9

Car idle after 15 mins, stat opens all hoses very hot, coolant circulates, heat from blower. needle on just below 9
Car on journey after 30 mins hoses luke warm as rad, needle between 7 and 8

Am I just being paranoid because the needle is not reacting like the original ? the stat was probably the original from 1994, maybe it was opening too early? I should take it on a longer journey and monitor, will keep you all updated.

Regards

I really wouldn't worry about it.....as with everything, thermostats have an operating tolerance or hysteresis and one won't necessarily act in the same way as another - even if they are the same make.
So long as the coolant level is stable and the heater continues to function, all is well.
John :)
