My old Buffalo NAS drive has finally given up and failed.

I was just going to buy a new one of same make/model but as there are loads of different out there does anyone have a good recommendation from personal experience?

Synology. I have a 2 bay and a 4 bay. Friggin brilliant bit of kit and very fast too over a decent network

I bought a WD My Cloud 3tb for £85.

Very quiet/ silent in operation.

Use it to host flac files for my Sonos system which it does very well!.

No personal experince, but a recent Web User review gave these three.

Gold award: Synology DS216j £161
Silver award: Qnap TS251A £263
Bronze award Bufallo Link station 520 £88

How many drives did you have in it, and what have you got attached to it.

I wold personally recommend a 4 bay, particularly if you plan to re-use old drives. Having said that 4TB WD Reds are going around a £100 now, so it depends how much storage you need.

I like the idea of one that constantly backs up the other in case 1 malfunctions. A 4 bay would be a bit over kill I think. 2 bay and probably 2tb each would suffice. Thanks for the feedback all I still can't decide :D going to wait for Black Friday to see if any super deals come along.

obviously if it’s RAID1 then 2 2Tb drives only gives you 2tb.

You can normally plug a USB mobile disk in for backup.

If all you want is RAID 1, and no facilities on the NAS drive, then stick with the Bufallo drive. If you need the facilities on a printer etc attached to the drive, then wiat for the sales, and see if you can pick up the Qnap.

I assume you know the different RAID levels, but here's a quick bit for any that don't
