Speed up a Netbook?

Can you wipe it and reinstall the operating system. If it's been getting progressivly slower lately, then it's likely been overloaded, running out of disk space, or you've got bloatware slowing it down. Have you gone into task manager and checked for anything taking up resources.
 
Best thing I did with mine was remove the mechanical HD and fit a solid state one, and fit it with as large memory as you can. Then install new copy of Windows 7. You'll have to read up how this is done from a thumb drive or network as clearly netbooks don't have DVD Drives...

Download the latest Linux Mint and it will fly. An SSD might help too.

Best option is to install the SSD then put Mint on giving you an easy way back if you don’t like it.

You can do a search for emachines 355 disassembly, or similar, and there are a lot of upgrades and changes being done to these machines.
 
It looks like this machine comes with 1GB RAM installed. Upgrade this to 2GB (the maximum it will accept, but you will have to ditch the 1GB module) and then install an SSD hard disk. I have a couple of HP netbooks to which I have done this, and they are much improved compared to the original spec. If I were you, I would stay with Windows 7 Starter, which is a cut-down version specifically for lower-spec machines (unless you want to move to Linux).
 
Dropped 2Gb of RAM in this morning (most tricky part was popping the keyboard out, to get the base off!), and it is much faster than it was previously.

An SSD will give you HUGE speed increases over some extra RAM.

Get one of these if you want the same amount of space, Samsung are a good make. If you don't even touch the sides of 250GB, you can get smaller ones for less.

Installing a Ubuntu based distro will help, but be sure to choose one that's lightweight yet powerful enough to run a decent GUI. You can run some on a live CD/USB to find one that suits you. Everyone will have a different preference on their distro.

No, you need to know what the connection is. i.e. SATA 3 or SATA 2 they are quite different! Size needs to be checked and not assumed. It maybe possible to use an adapter if size permits, but a SATA 2 controller will not get the best out of a SATA 3 drive, although obviously far better than the HDD fitted

Edit: Just noticed they do kits to upgrade your PC that include adapters with a SATA 3 SSD

It's very likely that although his controller won't handle the benefits of a SATA 3 SSD, it wouldn't even be getting the best out of a SATA 2 either, so might be a bit irrelevant in the end.

But have no doubt it will be an improvement on existing even if a SSD does not not realise its full potential
