Hello, I have a rather rotten side gate that needs replacing. The current gate does have side posts but as the gap is small these posts hinder getting things like the bins or lawnmower through, our pushchair does not fit and needs folding to get through.

I believe the gap wall to wall is 650mm.

I do not want to compromise the structural element but I do want to try and increase the usable opening as much as possible, what practical options do I have?

thanks in advance.

I have seen iron gates that have hinges you cement into the brick pointing, but they almost always seem to fail, the vibration of a slamming gate always seems to work them loose.
This looks a good solution, lots of nice solid fixings possible (shame the company is in Wisconsin! ) worth looking at a local iron workers showing them the picture and see if they can fabricate something similar.

many thanks for some good ideas, I had not considered that when open the gate itself will cause a blockage that may be similar to the post and therefore the post may not be as much of an issue at least on the hinge side.

I like the look of single long hinge, I suspect the hook plates of hinges could be welded onto a long support plate and then re-painted to create the same effect and remove the need for a post although that may not be the saving I initially thought given the open door int he way and its offset from the wall.

For the side with the lock and handle are there any space saving tricks or products you can think of so a large post is not required?
