I can see the orange button at the top left to post this question but there isn't one on the subject page I want to use. How do I post there to ask a question rather than replying to a question?

If you are looking at a Thread, look near the top of the page and you will see the sub-forum it is in.

For example post
https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/a1-alarm-manual.488101/#post-4024494
is in an existing Thread
https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/a1-alarm-manual.488101/
within the Alarms sub-forum, called
Alarms, CCTV & Telephones
https://www.diynot.com/diy/forums/alarms-cctv-telephones/
All forums are listed on
https://www.diynot.com/diy/

If you look at the questions previously asked in
https://www.diynot.com/diy/forums/forum-information/
you may find similar questions.

Yes I did that and followed the instructions, but the only orange button for starting a new thread is to ask advice and information from the forum like this one. The orange button doesn't appear on the sub forum page where I wan to post so should I ask on this page here and hope it will be posted to the correct page?

This whole part of the website is a forum.
At https://www.diynot.com/diy/ there is a list of sub forums, choose one that best represents your topic of discussion and click on the title of the sub forum.

For instance, if you have a plumbing problem you would click on "Plumbing and Central Heating" and that takes you into https://www.diynot.com/diy/forums/plumbing/
Once in there, in the top left hand corner is an orange button entitled "Post new thread" - click on that.
Enter a meaningful thread title (short and precise explanation of the main question) then in the body of the post explain as well as you can what you are asking.
(The better\more you explain then the better\more we can help you).

Then you can click on preview to check out what you have posted, or just click on the blue "create thread" button at the bottom left.

Before doing so you may also want to tick the "watch this thread" box below the blue button so that any replies will be sent to your email so that you can click on them to return directly to the thread instead of struggling to find it.
