We have an05 Terrano which we are thinking of changing after christmas. We need to tow a horse trailer and 4 wheel drive would be handy. Also have a large lurcher and two whippets. Top of the list is a Kia Sorento but volvos and jeep seem to fit the bill . Normally we try to go up at least 5 years so any help with pros and cons would be appreciated. This is our 3rd Terrano but they don't make them anymore.

You'd maybe consider a Toyota Land Cruiser?
The Sorento is a good buy - especially if you buy one as almost new. Sorry I can't comment on Volvo or Jeep though.

The Sorento should be a good choice......the early ones had a corrosion problem on the back axle - for reasons unknown- but they have a sound engine and transmission. Easy DIY servicing too!
The more recent ones don't suffer any particular issues.
John :)

Thanks John sorento seems to be no 1 choice also looking at a jeep as they seem to have more headroom in the back (the lurcher is quite big).

Check out the reliability ratings of Jeep before you decide. I haven't owned one but the brand doesn't seem to fare well.

well we bought a 12 plate mitsubishi outlander with 40 000 on the clock . So far so good with a trip from south Wales to NEC averaging 45 to the gallon. Tried 4wd when stuck in a show with an Ivor Williams trailer hitched and got out ok. Still don't know what half the gadgets do but we're happy so far.

The PHEV is a plug-in hybrid. I ask because I like the Outlander but not the price of the hybrid .

Have volvo xc90 deisel, plenty of towing power and 7 seats or the 5 seat xc60.

Would a Nissan X-Trail be too small? They can tow up to 2 tonnes. We have a T30 which is getting a bit long in the tooth now. Best tow car we've ever had (though not trouble-free)! It was replaced by the T31 (which was the same boxy shape but Renault mechanicals). Also, how about a Subaru Forester? Don't know what they'll tow, but they have a reputation for being absolutely indestructible!
