Been ratcheting the branches on my 3 roof bars using a bungee for bags. Worry they will scratch the paint on roof. Someone suggested changing the bars for roof rack. As I carry stuff like this 1-4 times a month is this worth it? Mostly just my ladder. Or could I temporarily tie a rubber mat on roof to protect it from wood, branches etc causing scratches ?

If your doing it every month buy a small trailer. Bungees are not a safe way to attach those bags to roof bars. You must use ratchett straps at the very least.

My garden shredder would have minced that down to a couple of bin bags full.

I don't think the old bill would be too keen on that......how about a £300 chipper?
John :)

Interesting idea. How big are they for storage? Got a link?

How about paying some carpet or a rubber mat on the roof of van so any wood or branches doesn't scratch the paint work?

It's storage space why I haven't got a trailor, can you get one that folds up small?

You can get trailers that break down
As a biker, following your van would give me nightmares

Getting done for an insecure load will cost you a fair bit in fines

I have a cheap shredder for my own garden and it makes a huge pile of branches into a small bag of chipping s

Check out the Bosch AXT 25TC......excellent machine with a slab cutter to chop the branches up. Well worth the money!

It was ratcheted. Surely that's legal

So, bungees then. Unsafe load.

So would rachets make the branches and bags legal in the police's eyes? Been doing this for years lol Driving past cops etc Never stopped.

Got a link for those folding trailors. And what you guys think of some rubber or carpet to protect roof (swimming pool mat which is waterproof) ?

The chipper deals with branches up to 11/2" maybe - whatever will go through its letterbox on the top. The rest are just cut up to manageable lengths.
John :)
