Hello, I'm newly registered today. Desperate for help please. Advice from professionals would be really really appreciated. I have just decorated my hall stairs and landing. Took weeks. Have had half height panelling fitted by a joiner, new architraves, coving, skirting. Was about to paint everywhere when my other half said the lining paper wasn't good enough and we got a pro in to re-line everywhere. He used Wallrock (I might be wrong with that name). I was going to use Farrow and Ball paint as I love their colours, but went for the cheaper option and got Crown Trade mixed to the nearest RAL colour to the shade FandB call Railings. Matt on the walls. Eggshell on the new panelling. PROBLEM - the matt on the walls shows every mark, even if I just brush my fingertips against it. The eggshell is waaay too shiny, looks like gloss. I need to re-do it all. QUESTION - what paint do I use? What's hard wearing, possibly wipe-able for the walls. And what paint for the panelling? Can I sand down the eggshell & paint a matt paint on it? Thank you

Silk on the walls is always a better bet- you can wipe it clean dead easy. No need for much prep if it is all fresh- just fire it on.

The panelling- yes you can sand and repaint with whatever you like, wouldn't recommend emulsion on wood though and if your original paint was water-based then use water based for the new finish

Sorry but I think silk will be as shiny as your *bad* eggshell. I do know that Crown is very matt - Best thing for the walls would be test pots of different emulsion brands.

Most of the standard matt emulsions mark to easy these days. The crown clean extreme would be a better bet. Benjamin Moore eggshell is supposed to be excellent or go for a satin in the form of Sikkens BL satura. I agree with Nige, silk on the walls is horrible and will show every lump and bump.

The eggshell is waaay too shiny,

Assuming that we are talking about oil based eggshell, post 2010 (VOC compliance), newly applied eggshell does indeed look very shiny but over time it does become more matt and after a month or two it should look like eggshell.

You can buy oil based dead flat matt paint, but I would recommend waiting until the eggshell becomes eggshell. An oxidising agent such as Terebene would have sped up the process but you can't use it retrocatively.

I try to avoid Crown paints (it is personal thang). If the emulsion is marking as much as you say, you could apply matt water based varnish over the top. Polyvine make a decent matt varnish. It isn't cheap but goes very far, you just need to make sure that you hoover the walls first so that you don't trap capet/whatever fibres and then use a foam roller).

The acrylic matt varnish will be wipeable, and unlike the wipeable emulsions it will not be quite so prone to develop shiny patches where you wipe it down.

Personally, I would avoid vinyl silk emulsion unless you want a shiny finish on your walls.
