Finally had an unvented HW cylinder fitted today, my mate the plumber was too busy, so got a plumber I saw working in our street to fit one instead. I was at work and left them to it and came back to find it all done. Impressed with the hot water pressure now, but not sure it's been fitted quite right, want to be armed with the right info before going back to them to ask to sort it.

The previous system was completely open vented in a Y plan with 3 port valve. It's been left open vented for the central heating, retaining the 3 port valve, but there is no additional zone valve for the HW cylinder now - as far as I know, that isn't acceptable.

The boiler does have a limit stat, the stat on the new cylinder is a 'dual stat' from what it's marked up as with control and limit, but I'm not sure if either of those removes the need for an additional 2 port valve. Cylinder is made by RM cylinders, possibly a Stelflow, MIs for that model state it needs an additional zone valve from what I can make out.

Also should I have had some paperwork to prove it has been registered etc, I haven't had anything, but maybe he is waiting for payment, or just hasn't done it yet

thanks in advance

I’ve often heard people say that g3 regs require a 2-port valve to be fitted but I’ve yet to find the section that directly stipulates its use.

It’s certainly possible to pipe up the cylinder in a Y-plan setup, although it would be quite unusual these days. I’m pretty sure the Stelflow come with a Honeywell 2-port valve.

Some more pics of all of your pipework would be helpful.

And maybe next time don’t hire a random plumber you spot in your street???

The first thing to establish is whether your installer was G3 Registered? This is a requirement in order to fit an unvented cylinder. The installation also needs to be notified to Building Control, usually via an approved scheme such as APHC, Gas Safe, OFTEC etc, but holding the unvented cylinders qualification and registration is a requirement in order to be able to do this. You are correct that a 2-port valve should also have been fitted, and wired through the overheat thermostat, to shut off the supply of heat to the cylinder in the event of an overheat situation. This would have been provided with the cylinder, so your installer has apparently run off with it.

As above, some more pics of the rest of your pipework would be good - there may be other installation errors we can't see.

Right I have taken some more photos, its quite hard to capture it properly because it's all tucked in to the airing cupboard. The 15mm => 22mm vent pipe at the back goes under the floor, along the garage ceiling and out through an external wall with 2x 90 degree bends to point it towards the wall, probably 4m total length.

Have looked up the engineer on Gas safe (he's got the logo on the side of the van, I do have an oil boiler though not gas) and it says vented cylinders but not unvented. I also spoke to him earlier and asked if I should have some paperwork to say it conforms to building regs, in case I have trouble when selling the house, he said it was the first he had heard of it but he will give me an itemised invoice to prove he has done it.

Not sure how I can confirm whether or not it has been registered with building control, and what paperwork (if any) I should have received. I think I will get my plumber mate to give it the once over one evening, have looked my mate up on Gas safe and he is ok for unvented. Just a shame he was too busy to do the job in the first place...

Also, this guy fitted an unvented to my neighbours house and refitted their bathroom, has 'unvented cylinders' in big letters on the side of his van, and that along with being gas safe registered I thought would be ok. Looks like that may not have been the case.

“First I’ve heard of it” means it’s not registered and it’s not going to be.

They install is a disgrace. D2 pipe is wrong as well as the mid position valve.

Can't see the cylinder expansion vessel. Is it a cylinder with an internal bubble?

Oh dear. Can I ask what is wrong with the discharge pipe, should it have been 22mm up to the tee off? I did think that looked odd.

Expansion vessel is above the cylinder just out of shot.

I have emailed gas safe, not sure what they can do about it, and will get onto my mate today to give it the once over. He's big mates with the local gas safe inspector so maybe I can go down that route.

What is a balbe ?

Metallica is an American Heavy Metal Band,

Lets hope the attention to technical accuracy is better than the proof readers attention to the text.

And what is there to prevent steam and scalding water coming out of the fixed grating and maybe harming person or property in the vicinity of the grating.

Get in touch with building control or ask a plumbers merchant if they know of a g3installer get it checked out, these things can be very dangerous and can cause a lot of damage if not done right
I hope you've got his name and number.Bob
