Hello,

I am looking at making some small glass holders for presents (next year!) and was looking for a table which shows all the different types of router profiles which can be made from various cutters. This is for my own reference but also so that I can choose a profile I like for the various people the presents are for.

My thinking is that if I have a reference guide I can tailor the profiles to the people which sounds odd but it makes sense well to me at least. Currently I am only going off what I have in my trend 35 piece router starter set. If I need to buy cutters that's fine but I need to know what I am purchasing before hand.

Any help is welcome.

Thanks

James

Trend will post you a catalogue. My local hardware store gives them away.

you have in general have basic cutters that will allow perhaps 2 different profiles with 2 different bearing and plunge depth
you have rebate/rabet cutters that will give you width off cuts in steps by using different bearings and and steppless variation in depth through plunge
you then have cutters that in general will give you a basic profile that bis only varied by plunge depth and fence or guide position
you also have specialist cutters that tend to be half inch and need a table for use for an exact purpose like cabinet door joints or mitre joints
you then get other cutters that dependant on which section off the long cutter touches the wood dictates which part off the multiprofile you get

Having a reference guide is only part of the solution - far better, I feel, to have actual samples of the profile in timber. Don't restrict yourself to Trend, though, Wealden Tool have an excellent website illustrating their range

Surely you'd want to prototype each holder before it went out??? Gift or not.

Struggling to keep up with all your projects, so may have to bow out here. Best of luck though.

Hi I am not sure what you mean about prototype them before they went out? Currently this project is very small and I am just looking for ideas really of what sort of profiles exist so I can see them.

Do you mean make them all up before hand and then make the real thing?

I am not limiting myself I am just after a reference guide of what's available really so where the guide comes from I don't mind nor if there are a few to look through :)

I will check out the link as well thanks :)

Thanks

James
