Could anyone recommend me a front door lock that combines top-notch security with value for money?

Look for any that are anti bump, and anti snap, and as Crank suggests don't get too cheap. Having said that, how exposed is your front door, as these features are more necessary when someone has the time to have a go at the lock. Most burglars go for an open windows rather than try and get in via the door.

You assume it has a euro cylinder, original post is too vague so how do we advise on what locks to buy hence my vague response

may be worth contacting your insurance company to find what level off extra security may reduce your premiums so be cost effective

A British Standard Deadlock, of course. BS3621

I hope you haven't got a plastic door.

Here are a few. The Union is particularly good value.

If somebody tries to sell you a Eurocylinder lock, ask if it meets the BS.

Your home insurance company will have a leaflet of specification called "minimum standards of home security." It may be within the policy or on their website. If you email them they will doubtless send you a copy.

Thanks guys. Great help. Should have said it's a wooden door and frame.

Probably a cylinder lock / night latch.

Usually set about 1400mm up.

For additional locking, fit a 5 lever deadbolt lower down, say 400mm up.

Personally I think in most cases burgulars dont enter by the front door, so dont make your front door like a bank safe if a toddler could break down your back door :)

Most insurers insist on a lock to British Standard BS3621.
On a timber frame door one good kick will put it thru so it's only a minor deterent and not worth worrying about.

Oh yeah. The london bar stays in place, and the lock gives way. But they do help a bit, just not that much.

Have you ever tried to kick a solid core door open with a London Bar fitted with the dead lock on?

I have and it took a lot of work before I could get in.
