Advice on decommissioning alarm without access to SAB bell box

I'd like to decommission a Risco alarm that is no longer used. I have access to the main unit and keypad (GT480), but I don't have a ladder to reach the bell box. The battery in the bell box is at least 10 years old, but still has enough juice to set off the siren when I cut power to the main unit. I'd prefer not to upset the neighbours.

Is it possible to shut down the system completely using the keypad? I have a master code (I can access the "Test" menu), but not I think an engineer code, if there is such a thing for this unit. The original installer is no longer in business, so I doubt I'd be able to get any more info.

I'm guessing the answer to that one is "no". So, could I cut power to the charger in the bell box while maintaining whatever connections or voltages are needed to keep the siren switched off? I could provide an independent 12V supply if necessary.

Without charging, I'm hoping that the battery would die within a week or two and I could then switch everything off.

There are 5 cables:

Strobe (+ ? There are 6 terminals, but I guess Strobe– is commoned with Bell– )
Bell +
Bell –
Bell Hold –
SAB TMP

Any advice would be appreciated.

Whatever you do the siren box WILL have to be opened to diss. the battery within, as removal of power will operate a tamper switch that will activate the siren.

Bite the bullet, beg, borrow or steal a ladder and diss. the siren first.

There is no short way around it I'm afraid.

Thanks Europlex. I was hoping there might be a fudge – applying 12V to the TMP line, say.

I'll speak nicely to my window cleaner.

:) I could arrange to be "not at home", I suppose. Or apologise in advance. The retired couple over the road are good neighbours.

Just power it down in the day ....20 mins later ....silence ....all done
I have just powered down my system to change some passives and move an RKP. My SAB kicked in then faded away around 10 mins, battery must be pooped after 19 years!
That's your best bet.

As suggested remove the power and battery at the panel and the bell well stop eventually, it will depend on the bell and the state of its back up battery if it has one as to when it will stop ringing.

There are some bell box's that can be put into hold off mode first and then removed which would stop the bell from sounding at all, I suspect that's not the case for you.

In general I don't advise removing alarm systems if they are not going to be replaced.

Thanks all. The battery lasted 15 painful minutes.

@securiam: I’m not removing the alarm, simply mothballing it.

lol think yourself luck had a guy call yesterday his bell lasted 30 minutes before it stopped.

While researching this I found a photo of a bell box with a massive lead-acid battery ;-(

Then again, perhaps nicads and NiMH live longer than lead-acid? The SLA in the main box was completely shot, but whatever is in the bell box clearly has a bit of life in it after ten years on the wall. I suppose these electronic sirens need only a few milliamps. Not sure if there’s a strobe – I didn’t dare go outside to look.

Still have some Aritech SCB bell boxes out there with a 7amp battery inside (but they do cut off after 20mins )
