Hi Forum, first post here so Hi! Middle aged guy doing up a property yada yada yada... A quick question hopefully someone here has done this before:

I have used monarfloor deck 9 sound insulation boards under my floating floor. That's all good.

I was told to use "Angled flanking band" to go between the skirting boards and the oak floor underneath to stop vibrations from foot traffic being transmitted from the floor, through the skirting and into the walls then down to the flat below. So I purchased a load of it. Its made out of foam and is bright yellow and is 6mm thick.

My problem is that I can't see how to fit it without having a 6mm yellow strip under the skirting boards. If I trim it down before putting it in there will be a 6mm gap that will be difficult to fill as its a floating floor and does move a bit when you walk on it.

Any ideas?

Attached picture from their website...

Cheers

Try using a sharpie or other technique to colour the edge that will show?
Possibly also add a scotia bead to the skirting held off the floor by a couple of spacers until fixed in place, then remove the spacers

What is a sharpie? I googled it and its showing me marker pens. That might be a solution. I'll get one and see if I can permanently colour the foam with it.

Why they made it bright yellow is beyond me.

Any other suggestions in the mean time would also be appreciated... thanks!

Personally I would have thought that the likely sound transmission into the wall from the floor would be of the 0.005% order and therefore something to forget about. This angle-band seems to me to be an attempt to sell "a complete system " whilst also increase the total invoice value.

I would either leave out this element entirely which risks some draughts or make the gap 2-3 mm and fill with coloured mastic .

OK so the misses just came up with a good idea... She suggested to take some white tape like gorilla tape or the like and wrap the acoustic strip in it before putting it between the floor and the skirting.

Only problem I see with that is that you won't be able to trim it down with a knife.

we use similar system in flats
the foam can be compressed down to about 4mm then a decent mastic joint to finnish off
but normally will chipboard over the top then any floor covering would hide the strip

What are your walls made of? Are they dense, heavy walls or crummy light weight stuff? How much impact sound is going to actually flank through the skirting?

Could you trim back the foam and bevel the bottom edge of the skirting, reducing the foam edge reveal?

Be careful if you decide to compress the foam. If you compress it too much it will reduce the resilience and bridge the gap anyway.

I know its a bit late but if you were looking to improve the sound insulation between you and the dwelling below, I'd have gone with the Gypfloor SILENT instead of the Monofloor. It would reduce the height lost in the floating floor, even with the resilient layer. In addition you could've added more mass in between the joists with a layer of plasterboard (and crammed in more mineral wool if you were really in the that kind of mood). If you have a look at the link above you can click on the Whitebook section which gives you sections through the floor and even details wall junctions.

All the best,
Mark
