Which hard drive?

I've got a Zyxel NAS 326. Okay, not the greatest but it was very cheap as the previous owner has gone over to a Synology 4 bay jobbie. I need two hard drives for it. I'm looking at fitting 2 x 2Tb drives, one mirroring the other. Everyone seems to recommend the WD Red series. Are they really worth the extra money? Looking on Amazon (got a £50 gift card so want to use them) the Reds work out at £141.60 for the 2 x 2Tb. WD Blue are £110.84 for the two and Toshiba P300 are a touch under £100 for the two. For the price of 2 x WD Reds I could get 2 x Toshiba 3Tb (£134). Anyone got any opinions on the Toshibas? What about the WD Blue? I've been warned to steer well clear of Seagate.

But then you will get all sorts of conflicting advice especially on this forum. For instance I have used Seagate drives for years in computers, servers, raid arrays, NAS etc etc and never had any problems. I will say this though if you ask me which hard drives I prefer I would say WD but not for any particular reasons.

But are the Reds worth the extra? I've been looking at some revues and yes, the reds do score well but the Toshiba P300 are not that far behind. Probably not noticable?? I've used Seagate in the past without problems (I can remember when a 20mb hard drive was huge!) but I've read reports that they have to be kept cool. Stuck inside a NAS is not the friendliest plce for a HDD

if you have mirrored drives, surely the tiny risk of a drive failure is not such a prob for you?

This is what I was thinking. If I go for Toshiba I'll get an extra 1Tb for my money. If one does die then it's mirrored so no loss and the speed difference is not that great from the WD Reds, probably not noticable for what I'll be using it for. The Seagates are dearer than the Toshiba and not much cheaper that the WD so I think I'll leave them anyway.

I went for 2 x 3Tb Toshibas. Only time will tell if was the right move but they seem quiet and so far running at a reasonable temperature.
