Myson Apolo boiler - clanging noise

The boiler is 25yrs old. There's a high /low switch on the boiler set to high.

Boiler in kitchen. Immersion tank, pump etc are located upstairs in a cupboard.

2 radiators downstairs and 3 upstairs.

Over the past couple of months we've had an intermittent clanging noise from the boiler, pipework or pump. Can't hear it from the radiators.

After clanging for 5 seconds the boiler stops, waits for a few minutes, starts up and then runs fine. I can't recreate the issue to better locate exactly where the noise is coming from.

I've bleed the radiators from each of the valves using a key and the pump via loosening the large brass screw. The water is clear.

I'd be much obliged if someone could suggest what the problem could be please.

Clanging or banging? Banging usually indicates water is trapped in the boiler, and is beginning to/is boiling, due to poor circulation. Check small cistern in the loft has water in it, and when you bleed the rads, does the water come out with a bit of force?

Water may well be clear, sludge and sediment usually settles to the bottom of the rads/boiler, only when you disturb it with any gusto does it turn black. Any idea if system contains inhibitor at the correct concentration?

Clanging noise.

Water comes out with some force when bleeding radiators.

No idea if there's any inhibitor in the system.

So the boiler made the noise once this morning and was then fine for 3 hours.

At the time of posting the thread the boiler had made the noise again but has been fine since

I'm into motorbikes and there's plenty of 25yr old ones being ridden

Some 25 year old boilers if well looked after can easily outlast a lot of the modern junk. If its clanging rather than banging it may be a fault within the boiler, but would need someone with a better knowledge of that boiler to advise. Maybe worth checking your inhibitor is at correct concentration too.
