Hi,

Need to replace light in kitchen, picture of wiring from old light below.

Old light had an earth wire rather than the fixed metal prong on new light. Wiring from old light was connected to terminal strip which was then pushed up into hole in ceiling.

To save trying to cram all wires into terminal on new light can I simply use a short piece of 1/1.5mm twin and earth from existing terminal into terminal on new light?

Pictures of existing wiring and new light attached.

Cheers
George

You should not have a terminal block pushed into the ceiling - ideally replace it with (for example) an Ashley J803

It would probably be easier to use flex to the light.

Thanks @ban-all-sheds, interesting comment about the terminal connector....the wiring to this light was made by an electrician in 2009 as part of a two storey extension.

Is the three way connector in the second photograph ( old ) the original connector ? Or was it previously 4 way connecter that was pushed into the hole in the ceiling.

The 4 terminals would be

Permanent Live
Switched Live
Neutral
Eatth

Or is there another lamp that is controlled by the same switch as this lamp. It that is the case then 3 terminal would suffice

Switched Live
Neutral
Eatth

The Permanent Live being looped around at the switches.
