Hi all,

Looking to remove the supporting wall underneath these floor joists. Rather than support with a beam underneath I’m wondering if I can simply use hangers to attached to the joist at the end (as pictured, there’s actually 3 together here, they have a solid wall ontop). There’s less than 6 inches from the supporting wall I’m looking to remove and the end of the joists, so doesn’t feel like I would be making them work any harder (in terms of increasing their length). The “Joists x3” pictured are supported at either end on an internal brick wall.

Thanks.

You will be adding a significant load if you do, and without calculating the capacity of the triple joists and the walls that support them it's impossible to say.

Also, the wall you propose removing might provide lateral restraint if it's built in to other walls below.

Best seek the advice of a builder and/or structural engineer.

I would just add that even if joist hangers were a structurally acceptable solution, they would likely have to be these, top joist hanger, types:

...rather than one of these, face fix, types:

...........and therefore involve considerably more work than you might be contemplating.

Cheers,

Thanks for your reply Blup, given what you've said i think adding new joists (next to the 3 supporting the 1st floor wall) might be a better idea, i'll know then that they're only supporting the weight of the floor and not the wall too! I'll be doing the job with a builder, but i wanted to do my homework first :)

Thanks.
