35mm 3 port zone valve with spring return?

Your oil depth is there or thereabouts, but you need to measure the flow rate. This can be impaired by a build up of 'film' on the metering column which should be cleaned at each service. The wicks do nothing in the normal run mode, unless they become carboned up and can prevent cross flow in the burner. They are designed to aid lighting by providing cold vaporisation.

When you describe a coil above the burner, this does not sound like a factory bespoke product. Those Agas with a boiler in the combustion barrel usually are more like a 'saddle' on one side.
Looking at your radiator, I would not think this is suitable for a gravity heat sink as the flow through it is very restrictive. If you are going to rely on this alone, it needs changing for a more open unit, such as a large towel rail style.

I don't know what you mean by the metering column. What is it and where would I find it?

From what I remember seeing, it's definitely not as you describe.

I don't really want to change that radiator because it suits the room well, but I could make the bypass go to an additional radiator in the loft if it came to it.
 
The metering column is in the float control. You need to remove the top to release it from the spring holding it in the discharge port.
 
Ah OK, thanks for that. I'll be turning it off soon now the weather is warmer, so I'll have a look at that some time over the summer.

I ended up fitting a Leengate 1.5 inch valve, as that had an internal bore of just over 30mm so shouldn't present too much of a flow restriction.

Ignore the randomly positioned microbore (that's there ready for something else and will be tidied at that time).

The hot water from the Aga comes in through the wall in 28mm copper. 22mm copper goes up to a vent but 28mm tees off to the valve, which fails safe to dumping heat through the rad if there's no power (spring return). I haven't wired it up yet.
