Can anyone please advise what is the generally accepted shelf overhang beyond the front of its supporting bracket.

Thanks

Bit of an unanswerable question without knowing the construction & what you intend to place on the shelf.

as a rough guide if its a well supported "L" bracket with a normal load
with the long section secured to the wall then the total shelve depth will similar in depth to the long arm and maybe a wee bit more so the bracket arm is about 75% the depth
but as said wall construction 'load 'bracket type and spacing along with shelve material and thickness affect the answer

The shelves will be in the kitchen and will hold general stuff, like spice jars, sundry packets e.g. of rice and the like - nothing individually heavy.
The wall is an external wall made of brick.
The shelves are some 300mm deep.

Hope this helps.
Thanks

6" would be more sensible with a smaller 3" shelve underneath or on top dependant on position for easy access to spice jars ect
