Hi All,
It's been a while since I last posted, so long that I've had to start with a new username and profile etc. Anyway my previous project was an attached garage with attic room, shown in the pictures. At the time it was built , five years ago, with the possibility that it would be extended upwards. i used this forum a lot during the time that I built it and have always browsed through for different things so thought i'd share my own experience.
The original build was a carbon copy of my next door neighbor's extension, basically to avoid it from looking out of place. The main difference being that my neighbor's use the attic as a room whereas I used it as a gym. However, two kids later, bulging at the seems and unlikely to afford another property offering anything more we're now at the stage where we have planning permission plus a building warrant in place.
The gym has now gone, two thirds of the 'garage' area on the ground floor will be a dining room and there will be a master bedroom above. This will leave a small section at the front as storage space. Three things I know for sure I'll get a professional in for is the rough casting, electrics and the roof trusses. On the present build I used an aggregate company for the concrete foundation and everything else in between I tackled myself. My construction background is basic. I'm a mechanic to trade however started bricklaying at college with a small stint at a joinery firm, but my main experience comes from some weekend laboring and doing a lot of DIY i.e. building sheds/garages from scratch, erecting fencing and also doing some monoblocking so most jobs i'm more than happy to tackle with confidence.
I hope to add some pictures as I go along to help or encourage others who feel they can do the same, i'm far from perfect but love a challenge and at the same time know that sometimes a job is for the pro's. That being said, i know i have came to the right forum for help and questions when i need it most.
