About 6 months ago I had a deck 3x4 metres built which I am happy with,
apart from about 3 lengths of board at one side seem to hold the rain a bit longer than the others boards (there is not much of a gap between any of the boards about 4or 5 mm ) before it drains. I was thinking of drilling a few 5mm holes along the length of the 3 problem boards. does this sound like a reasonable idea any other sugestions  deck is raised 300 mm
Thanks.

sounds a good idea, but in practice it isnt because you are now giving the water somewhere else to start top rot from.

I have to confess i did it with my bbq, guess where it rotted

I have this problem too.

I wonder if rather than holes, it would be better to router some groves across the board, and then water in the exiting grooves could then drain sideways?

if its only a few boards stick a spirit level on them ad compare it to the boards adjacent that have no problem. They may just need shimming up slightly

The gap between boards makes no difference - think about it: how would water sitting in the grooves of your boards end up draianing away between the boards?

As Thermo said, the boards prob have a little bow in them. Should just need a tweak, though it does sound like the deck is a little too level to start with.

Either you have very bowed boards there or your deck is not draining enough.

The gaps between the boards are there for expansion of the boards rather than drainage. When your deck was built it should be tilted very slightly to allow the water to drain off the deck. There's not much you can do about it now apart from use a broom to sweep the water away when required.

Don't drill any holes in the deck now as you will start to get rot in the wood and eventually the boards will be weak enough to cause a nasty accident.

I too have this problem with my decking.

The very centre pools water. Dries quick now in the summer but the winter it may become an ice rink.

I thought about drilling holes in each channel across the problem area....and just treating the holes like you would a cut end and top up each year.

I also like this idea of routing out a channel...really think this could work. Do people think that’s a better idea?
