Pope Francis has said climate change is a challenge of "epochal proportions" and that the world must convert to clean fuel.

"Civilisation requires energy, but energy use must not destroy civilisation," he said.

Pity all those half empty churches do not spend some money on energy efficiency.
They must be the least energy efficient buildings on earth.
Although I suppose all the candles are a start.

He might be a hypocrite but he's not wrong. I've never understood why geothermal is not better utilitised and rarely mentioned. Much more bang for your buck compared to both solar and wind.

I cant see improving the energy efficiency of churches is going to make any real difference to energy conservation.

They dont get heated much. Although I cantbsay Ive been in a Catholic church, so I cant speak for them

theres has always been climate change. how much does a volcanic eruption create. we should ban volcanic eruptions.
there is a place in the sahara desert, where there is rocks with drawings of a once vibrant village ,drawings of lush growth and flowing rivers, that was thousands of years before cars, planes, factorys, but it turned in to a desert. so you cannot blame that on co, it was climate change, that happens all the time.
I do agree about citys getting cleaned up as you can taste the diesel fumes in London its that bad, mainly because theres no wind air movement enough to clear it, it just sits there.
chemicals being dumped in rivers ,or sea and in the ground , nuclear waste, plastic, oil spills, and other crap, chopping down forests, overfishing, you name it,there bigger issues than co, imo

You don't know what you are missing.

Id be interested to see a confession box, just imagine all those years of parishioners telling the priest their sins.

Is it the catholic church that has the swinging incense burner.......i did go to a service as a child where they did that.

yep tis the catholic church with the incense burner . My mother is a church going Catholic . We used to have to attend church every Sunday.

At that time (?) afaik she was banned from the confessional box as she had married a non catholic ( my father) probably a sin so grave , that no amount of hail Mary's would have cleansed her soul

just add that I was never abused by a preist ;)

I am a church member and we are concerned about the environment. http://www.ecocongregationscotland.org/ and https://ecochurch.arocha.org.uk/ are both working to encourage churches to use less energy.
I think the energy use in members' homes is far greater than that used in church buildings and we are encouraging members of the congregation to look at ways to reduce their own energy consumption.
Everyone needs to do all they can to reduce energy use. I am trying to persuade my own church that a ground source heat pump would be a better energy source than a gas boiler.

We looked into ground source heat pumps at a school . They would get a feed in tarrif for 20 odd years ?? but the cost of the equipment , bore hole ect ect plus electricity to run it , plus the assumption that the kit would last 20 years (which it will not)

and the fact that they were on the gas grid , made it financially a waste of time . A different approach may have been taken if they were not on the gas network ?

Just add to my previous post

which was looking at the issue at the school from a purely financial point of view & not any green principles.

that's what hitler and the natzis used to obtain intelligents, in second world war, confession boxes. and guess who helped finance hitlers war machine.
and guess who helped hide the war criminal natzis on the run. the pope was nicknamed hitlers pope.
the Vatican covering up sex abuses, and you know there history of killing thousands of Christians that made a stand against them, for exposing them for who they really are.

What about all this business with the black and white smoke, that cant be good for air quality

Energy efficiency saves money, but on a macroeconomic level leads to greater environmental impact in the long term, owing to Jevon's Paradox.

Without some control measure (eg. Carbon taxes), ones carbon footprint often increase after improving efficiency.
