Led lighting

Hi. I have replaced a halogen ceiling lamp with a led one. The switch is a standard dimmer. When turned on the lamp glows but is dim and the dimmer has no effect.

Will a led dimmer solve the problem? In that, the lamp glows brighter as well as dimming.

Thanks for any advice.

Is the LED dimmable?

Is the dimmer suitable for LED lights?

Is the LED dimmable with the type of dimmer you have?

What, exactly, did you replace? What type of bulb did the old light use?

The led lamp says dimmable.

The dimmer fitted does not state led compatible. So presuming not.

The old lamp used G9 halogen. Little fellas with two legs, look like Plankton from Spongebob.

I am asking as before I splash out on new switches, will a compatible dimmer solve the dimness? The lamp came from B&Q but the staff are not so bright too.

What did you replace?

The bulb?

The light unit?

The light unit and its power supply?

I am asking as before I splash out on new switches, will a compatible dimmer solve the dimness?

If that's the only problem.

Does it work OK if you just have a switch?

I have replaced the whole lighting unit.

I haven’t isolated the dimmer. The system is a two way. One dimmer and one on/off at the other side of the room.

Don’t know what that is, sorry.

I am going to replace the dimmer with a standard on/off switch. If ok, then I’ll purchase an led dimmer. If not, then it’s gonna get returned.

Halogen bulbs with a G9 base will be extra-low voltage, 99.999% of the time 12V.

So if your old light had a 12V supply that was separate from it, and you connected a 230V light to it, that isn't ever going to work, and the problem has nothing to do with the switch.

As suspected the unit is faulty. I swapped the dimmer for an on/off and it was still dim. The instructions stated the brightness can be changed by flicking the switch quickly. Most bizarre. So I did and it went bright like a solar flare, and then went dim again, then bright and dim and so on all by itself. A mind of its own.

It’s going back.

You're right - for some reason I was thinking of G5.3.

I did have an explanation of why I was thinking that, but I left it on the bus and then the dog ate it.

It’s going back.

Perhaps you're meant to turn it off then on again when the desired dimming level is witnessed?

I tried that. It only works on dim. The ‘burn out your retina’ setting dims after a few seconds and anything in between is a complete fail. I tried today with a led dimmer, but I got a strobe light effect. The more your turn, the faster it flashes.
