The previous owners have had down 22mm followed by 9mm ply in half of the hallway to level to the existing screed level. They’ve only screwed at 500mm centres.

My tiler has suggested to put down a sheet of 5.5mm ply on top and screw at 100mm centres (300mm is the standard he said) and the self level the existing screed up to it. Could the 3.6mm ply work instead so it’s less self levelling compound to use?

How does that sound?

Thanks

i dont understand what your saying.do you have photos?
ply is fixed at 300mm in the field and 150mm at the edges.but you can fix at 100mm if you want.
for tile on ply, skirting is usly lifted and joists must be rock solid.

So put in more screws if you're worried about the fixing centres. Why put even more ply on top of 31mm (!) of existing ply??

Thanks guys. Here are some photos.

So in the pics the screed I’m standing on needs 2-6mm of self level on it so the idea was to add 5.5mm ply on top to create a smooth solid surface (screwed at 100mm centres) and the self level up to it.

That was the idea.

Looking at it again... I can’t see it’s got much dpc under it so maybe it’s worth pulling it out and dropping screws into it. It’s between 30-35mm in depth.

In an ideal world I'm thinking of ripping it up and putting a screed down but I'm I don't think that 30 - 35mm is deep enough to do that is it?

Either use hardie or rip up the existing ply and put down 18mm. If you put 6mm down on top then your floor will fail as 6mm is incredibly unstable due to warping between the centres which causes hollow spots.
