Tiling over floor tiles

Hi. I want to tile over the floor tiles in my kitchen, because I have been told by the Mrs that I need to get the job done quickly. It is also somewhat temporary as I've been told we will be completely redoing the kitchen in two years...

Original tiles are laid on concrete. They are glossy, 300mm x 300mm and are well-fixed / feel very solid / have no cracks. I was going to clean the old tiles, then prime with an acrylic primer and then use Mapei Keraquick Rapid-Set Flexible Adhesive to fix the new 300mm x 600mm tiles. Is this acceptable or do I need to rub the old tiles down with sandpaper before cleaning?

Also does anybody have any tips to reduce the little chips that I seem to get at the edge of a tile when I cut them? Should I be moving the tile much more slowly through my £35 screwfix tile cutter?

you will raise the FFL and could give yourself knock-on difficulties but its certinly doable.

a good new blade wheel and good water supply will give clean cuts.
no matter what,never rush material through a cutter/saw. nice and easy does it.

I doubt that sandpaper will scratch the surface sufficiently. I'd be inclined to scuff them using an angle grinder with a diamond blade.

Noted - thanks for the advice. I am not particularly concerned about the floor height changing, as I will just re-cut the plinths. The living room is already higher because I installed engineered floor over the floorboards, which is also why I thought tiling over the tile was a good idea!

Surely the dust would be unbearable? I have no extraction facilities. I have the kit though so this would be an option. Also, would the Mapei Keraquick Rapid-Set Flexible Adhesive be a good bet?

There will be some dust, but you can hold a vacuum hose near by.

Rather than plumes of airborne dust you will have tiny glazing chips all over the floor (which will hoover up with ease). It not gonna be a dusty as actually gutting through a tile.

Mapei Keraquick Rapid-Set Flexible Adhesive- sounds good. You may want to mix a slurry first and use a green webrax pad to scrub it into the floor first though.

I am tackling the job this weekend when the Mrs is away. I have the Keraquick tile adhesive and Mapei recommended that I add the Latex plus for improved movement protection. Just wanted to check, should I put adhesive on the new tiles going down as well as the existing floor tiles, and what notch should I be using on the trowel? Max depth is 10mm.
