using gravel boards to make a 3.5ft retaining wall. Apart from the weight of the soil, there will be no additional load.

Just wondered if there is any strength difference between the rock face boards and the plain ones as they are the same price for me

Gravel boards won't be very strong and will likely bow in that application. Sleepers will be better.

how will you prevent the "wall" from being pushed over?

the weight off the soil could easily be up to a tonn dependent on soil type volume supported and water content and whats on that soil

Ive got 2 concrete gravel boards, one above the other holding back about 18" of soil. Its just 1 gravel hoard length and I concreted in 2no 4" × 4" posts. The gravel boards are retained in slotted posts.

Its been fine for a few years, but I dont think Id try 3.5ft

How high is the wall going to be? As others have mentioned, I'd be very dubious about the ability of gravel boards to hold any meaningful amount of soil back. I'd go with sleepers...

I wouldn't use more than one gravel board for holding back soil.

They are not designed for that application.
