IIRC, as a rule of thumb, a 7W LED is of a similar brightness to a 60W or 75W incandescent, with the halogen bulbs being a bit brighter/watt than the normal incandescent bulbs. So yes, I'd agree with John that the LED is most likely brighter - but it does vary quite a bit between different LEDs (both actual brightness and perceived brightness seem to vary with colour temperature for example).
Apart from the running costs which aren't going to be a major factor unless you have the lights on a long time and/or have a lot of them (c.f. the requirement for lost of little torches when you go for downlights), LEDs should need changing a lot less often - and if good ones, perhaps never during your lifetime/ownership

SWMBO is one of those who likes the look of bare bulbs ("give me a good old 100W bulb" is one of her sayings when it comes to lighting), I've found
these seem to be quite bright and also aesthetically acceptable to her (and to me, I can take a globe, but aren't keen on a bare GLS). So depending on your aesthetics requirements, you can get some quite bright LED bulbs these days. Elsewhere in the house, I've got mostly
these 9W ones and SWMBO hasn't moaned about them. Last one I bought was
this Philips 13W one which is the nearest I've found to an LED replacement for "a good old 100W bulb".
