This fitting supplies an adjacent gas fire, installed about 20 years ago. It was looking very dull, and I am decorating so applied some Brasso. A small ring dropped off - see pics.

I thought initially it came from the joint further back towards the wall but size-wise, I think it is from round the turn slot at the front. Any idea what this ring is? A crush washer? O ring? Just decorative?

There is no smell of gas and soap bubbles do not show any leakage. Is it safe or should I get it changed?

Hi, thats a bonded washer for the pedestol iso valve.
It is needed.
Phone 0800 111 999. I would advise to get sorted asap

The emergency gas call out don’t fix things? They simply tell you something is leaking and turn it off. Surely a gas safe engineer would be the better option.

They'll come out within 2 hours to confirm if its leaking or not.
They may even have the washer. Its hardly a repair.

I agree if there is any fear gas is leaking don’t mess around call them out. They will very unlikely fix it they will confirm it is or isn’t leaking if it’s leaking they will switch your supply off and advise to call a gas safe engineer.

I believe it actually is not a bonded washer, that is still in the correct position. It is a decorative ring that fits between the pedestal and the elbow section. As one tightens the elbow, it crushes, but fills the inevitable gap. Which is now visible.

To confirm, does it feel metallic or leatherish

But it would do no harm to get Transco (whatever they are now) to check

I actually think your probably right. I thought looking at the picture there was a groove where the washer should be.

The brass ring has nothing to do with the restrictor elbow, i have fitted many of these in the past.

The ring is in fact a 'swish' curtain ring, i have them on my curtains right now and have a box full of spare rings. There are several types, some had a tang/eyelets, look carefully at the photo to observe the missing eyelet opposite the gap.

maybe the duster used was an old piece of curtain !!!

Google search for "swish brass curtain rings"

I think it is brass and it definitley fell off the valve from somewhere - and we have no curtain rings that size in the house! Although I agree it does look like a curtain ring which is why I thought it might just be decorative. But I will call BG tomorrow and get them to come and have a look. Thanks for all the replies.

TOFO.end of.tis a repair!

TOFO??

I am going to ask BG to change it anyway as it is supposed to be an isolation valve but to my knowledge it has never been used in the last 20 years so I have my doubts as to whether the valve would turn - or it might fall apart if I did. Since I am decorating the room, it is a good time to do it.

Monday: BG almost certainly won't do it without a full service contract, which you absolutely do not want.
Those valves last forever, so do not worry about changing it. It is not designed as a user control, but for service engineers.

My advice?
You seem smart enough to to be concerned about safety, has the fire been serviced on regular basis, or within the last year, or thereabouts.
If not, then find an experienced and gas fire registered Gas Safe guy, and ask him for a service. Explain about the service valve, and he will check it and replace if necessary.
Although it would be wrong for me to say how others should operate, on my charging structure it would cost almost as much for a new valve as it would a fire service and check. And changing the valve at the same time would not be a great deal. If the missing decor ring is not bothering you, then don't bother changing it, unless necessary.

DO NOT GET BG TO DO IT

For a free check, contact Cadent and explain your concern.

Many thanks for taking the time for detailed advice. I do have a service contract with BG although it is for the boiler, not for other appliances. The fire has been serviced within the past year - it is usually serviced every autumn because the igniter packs up.

Note what you say re Cadent but presumably this is the equivalent of the BG gas leak line. As there is definitely no leak, I am disinclined to claim there is - and if no leak they ain't interested! Reassured by your conclusion that it IS just a décor ring though. But I will get the fire serviced at the same time.
