Hi all,

I am opening up a second internal doorway in a block wall (single skin) that supports a flat roof and the end of the rafters of a pitched roof. The new doorway will be 600mm across from another internal doorway. The structural engineer gave me two options

1. Open up a 2.4m clear gap with a catnic box lintel and form the two doorways within the gap
2. Open up an approx 800mm gap for the second doorway leaving a 600mm (one block) pillar and using a 65 x 100 concrete lintel.

Option two would be easier for many reasons but will the 600mm pillar be strong and stable enough to support the lintel and roof loads? I’ll obviously have one course of a full block then two half blocks on the next course etc.

Thanks in advance
