I'm in the middle of rewiring the house and I've left the 2 way switching for the stairwell till the end which I now need to tackle. I would like the hall lighting and the landing lighting to be able to be switched on and off from upstairs and downstairs. I've looked through the reference section and I'm not sure the diagrams mentioned would suit my purpose (I was hoping there would be a diagram titled 2 way switching for stairwells that would jump out at me ..). Please can someone point me in the right direction?

Oh, also I am looking to buy a 12way CU. Are there any particular makes that are better quality rather than comparing on price alone?

Many thanks for your help.

If you look at this link
http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/DataSheets/MK/WiringDiagrams.pdf
(borrowed from BAS again :D ) at the 3rd diagram entitled "2 way switching 3 wire control" it shows the most common way of doing this using a length of 3+E to connect the switches. The inbound cable from the ceiling rose joins from the left, connecting to L1 and L2 as shown. The new, harmonised, colours replace the inbound red for a brown. For the 3+E cable, the new colours are Black, instead of yellow, and Grey, instead of Blue. All these should be sleeved brown as they are all, at some point, phase conductors.

Does that help?

Thanks for the help didthathurt and Spark123. :D I will have a crack at this now.

What have your LABC said about this?

Do you intend to do your own series of tests before and after energising?

Do you have access to appropriate calibrated test equipment and do you know how to use it?

MEM, Hager, Merlin-Gerin, Siemens....

Hi,

Having looked at the diagrams for 2 way switching the bridging wire goes from switch to switch.
Can this be achieved via a junction box?
I have 2 lights in my stairwell. 1 is 2 way switched already but the other one in single way which I want to turn into 2 way. The cabling is buried in the wall but the junction box is available from the floorspace above.

Thanks

We're working with a qualified (Part P) electrician who is going to test, fit the CU, metertails and certify it. I'm just doing the hard work of lifting the floorboards, moving furniture and laying the cables. I wanted to understand as much as I can about the 2 way switching so I know how the cables run.

It's easy. At the TOTS, you have a T&E for the landing light and at the BOTS you have a T&E for the hall light. Just send a 3 core & E from the top to the bottom, and a 3C&E from the bottom to the top, connecting them as per the diagram showing two way switching using 3C&E.
