There is a lot on this forum about painting over vinyl silk but some confusing and conflicting, so please forgive me asking again and specific to my case.

>> I plan to paint over a large ceiling currently in 20 year old vinyl silk, with Dulux Trade matt.
Having had problems in the past going over silk, I plan to use Zinsser 123 over the washed and keyed silk, then the Trade matt on that. Zinsser has worked well in the past with difficult surfaces.

But now I wonder if vinyl matt over sanded/keyed and washed vinyl silk would be the best way - vinyl on vinyl?

All answers much appreciated.
Thanks

I would just sand the silk and then apply the matt without worrying about the Zinsser.

..... then apply the matt without worrying about the Zinsser.
>> Thanks, does that mean I should apply the vinyl matt or Dulux Trade matt?
Or are they both vinyl anyway?
>> I would prefer to use Dulux Trade Matt directly if it will work on old vinyl silk?
>> Is that ok?

I'm happy to apply the Zinsser if there is a benefit and it may be easier than sanding a large ceiling upside down?

Your comment please...
Thanks

If you are happy to exchange elbow grease for the Zinsser, then, sure go for it.

Thanks opps.
Do you mean that the Dulux Trade Matt (is this a vinyl?) will go directly on a sanded or Zinsser'd vinyl silk?

The standard Dulux trade matt is a vinyl matt paint. It will be fine over sanded vinyl silk or the Zinsser.

Some trade matt paints, often referred to generically as contract matt, have a much lower vinyl content. Whilst they are great to use on plaster that might still be slightly damp or new, they are less suitable on areas of high traffic as they cannot be wiped clean. They can also be prone to crazing when used over silk finishes.
