Hi all,

I have a bedroom with black spot mold on one external wall and the adjoining window reveal, the root cause I believe is poor ventilation and furniture placed up against the external wall.

I plan on cleaning the mould off with a special cleaner and then using an anti mould paint to minimise the risk of reoccurrence.

Does anyone have any recommendations of products to use?

I was thinking of using Zinsser perma-white interior which has anti mould additive and is also tintable so I can have magnolia colour.

I’m not sure on the cleaner / neutaliser, any recommendations?

I also want to get the job done in one day so don’t really want a cleaning product I have to leave for days.

Thanks in advance.

If it was that dangerous they wouldn't be selling it. You pour a few drops into the paint not all over your skin.

Fair call. Sorry I wasn't intentionally being combative. I do however question the need to add biocides to paints that already have them.

I am not a chemist but who knows what is being released from the paint into room (over the longer term) whilst the occupants are sleeping?

As you suggested earlier, air flow, or a dehumidifier will solve the problem without needing to do anything else.

I see they also offer a cleaner, but I didn't really want to wait the 24 hrs stated, in and out in a day kind of thing......are there any other pre cleaners on the market that anyone knows of? From what I've read bleach isn't an absolute killer of mold.

@ic1927 Have you tried the dedicated mold paints in comparison to this additive?

It is pretty effective in most cases that I have come across. It is also cheap and fast. I would go with ic1927's advice.

EDIT_____________

I would imagine that the mold is surface based. Killing it should be pretty trivial with bleach.

The owatrol vc 175 is tried and tested and trusted throughout the industry. I've used crown steracryl and it lasted about 12 months before the mould re-appeared. Years ago I worked for a retired industrial chemist and he said bleach is the best thing for killing mould, he said don't waste money on these fancy mould killers, they are all but bleach in name.

Well I did wonder about these 'special' cleaner claims and other things I have read about bleach not being a full killer of mould, if these stories actually come the manufacturers of the products.....

What ratio of bleach do you use? In your experience does the bleach solution actually remove the black deposits or just kill the spores, i.e. kills but leaves black discoloration behind?

Maybe I'll try a washable matt with the vc175 added. I was tempted with the Zinsser perma white as I've been impressed with their other products. But you mention above about the dedicated stuff being a ineffective measure.

To be honest this is very difficult for me to control as this is a rented property, and I believe the problem is down to poor ventilation and things placed against external walls. So in essence I am trying to minimise the risk of re-occurrence.

You could consider fitting quiet humidistat extractor fans or window weep vents that can't be closed.

If the property becomes vacant I will......It is not feasible at the moment with tenants in.
