I need to take on a self employed labourer to help with joist hanging, fixing plasterboard, timber framing etc. Nothing too taxing.

What sort of day rate should I be looking to pay do you think?

I’m in Wiltshire.

Minimum wage is £7.83 per hour, after that its up to you to decide, how much do you need another labourer

Thanks Notch7, very helpful.

Thats in my area, sussex / surrey.

Ive paid self employed labourers / learners around the £75 / £80

And I sometimes 'borrow' a labourer from a plasterer I know. Hes a quite a skilled labourer that can run in a bit of brickwork, knock up, fit celetex etc. I pay him £100 / day.

IME you get far more value from an improver than a novice, but anybody half decent is hard to get hold of.
